We have unpacked the MakerBot and spent a day at the weekend having a crack at building it! We bought the thing-o-matic mk7 kit, which might be a little ambitious and roped in our friends Chester and Sophie to help out.

For those who don't know, a MakerBot is a 3D printer which is, essentially the future...

The kit comes in about a gazzilion exciting looking bags, with all the parts laser cut in wood forms. The T slot construction method takes a bit of getting used too, but once you're confidant enough to just drop and catch the bolts between pieces the process speeds up alot.

With alot of patience and humour we pulled apart the MakerBot wiki we were following to pull it all together.

We've got a few VERY exciting ideas about what we are going to do with this MakerBot, but we just need to make sure it all comes together and works before we start shouting about them...

So far we have completed the X stage, Y Stage, Z Stage, Extruder and Body Assembly. We're a bit petrified as the next stage involved wiring a safety cut off to work with the thermal heater which reaches temperatures of around 500 degrees...
